2 sushi restaurants near Fushimi Inari Taisha Shrine : Within a 2 km radius, Budget of 2,000 to 3,000 yen
Have you ever eaten sushi that wasn't conveyor-belted? At chain restaurants, the sushi is mostly shaped by machines. Have you ever eaten sushi shaped by human?
There are no conveyor-belt sushi restaurants in the vicinity of Fushimi Inari Taisha Shrine; instead, there are three private sushi shops. One of these, "Matsuhiro(松廣)," opened relatively recently, and unfortunately, I have never visited it. This article introduces the other two establishments. Both are small shops with fewer than ten counter seats.
Sushi-masa(寿司政)
| Dist. from Fushimi Inari Shrine | 1.5km |
| Business hours | Lunch 11:30〜14:30,Dinner 16:30〜21:30,Closed on Tuesday |
Sushi is a mysterious food. Although it involves nothing more than pressing the topping onto the vinegared rice, some shops are excellent while others are not. There are places where the bill comes to 30,000 yen, and others where it is just 2,000 yen. Consequently, the only way to judge the quality of a shop is by its value for money—specifically, whether the taste justifies the price.
Sushimasa is a solid choice if your budget is around 2,000 to 3,000 yen. It's a real win in terms of value for money. The Regular Set (にぎり, nigiri) is ¥1,500, the Little Premium Set (上にぎり, jyou-nigiri) is ¥2,000, and the Premium Set (特上にぎり, tokujyou-nigiri) is ¥3,100. With a wide range of sets available to suit any budget, travelers won't have trouble choosing. Even if you add beer or sake, the total will likely stay under ¥5,000.
Tou-wa(とう和)
| Dist. from Fushimi Inari Shrine | 1.5km |
| Business hours | Lunch 12:00〜14:00,Dinner 17:00〜23:00,Closed on Sundays |
This Japanese restaurant was opened by a sushi chef, so the menu offers plenty of options beyond just sushi. For lunch, they serve sets such as seafood rice bowls(海鮮丼, kaisendon). While the lunch sets are certainly delicious, if you specifically want to enjoy sushi, you should visit during dinner hours (from 5:00 PM onwards). Their pricing structure is similar to that of "Sushimasa": the regular set (にぎり盛り合わせ, nigiri-moriawase) is ¥1,500, and the premium set (上にぎり盛り合わせ, jyou-nigiri-moriawase) is ¥2,000.
Payment is cash only. It is a small, privately run shop managed by a friendly couple. However, because the space is limited, they may not be able to seat you if the shop is full. They also close irregularly. If you go after 5:00 PM and find they are full, you might want to try "Sushimasa" instead.
You might not always be able to visit these sushi shops due to timing or your route. If you still crave sushi, try looking for the deli section at a nearby supermarket. Just keep in mind that items often sell out by evening—Japanese people love sushi, too.
